If you’re seeking a serene escape in the heart of Nara, look no further than 柳茶屋・奈良茶飯 (Yanagi Matcha Cafe). This enchanting cafe combines traditional Japanese aesthetics with mouthwatering culinary offerings, providing guests with an authentic tea experience unlike any other. Nestled at 4-49 Noboriojicho, the cafe is set within an old Japanese house that beautifully exudes history and charm, making it feel like a delightful time capsule.

As you step inside, you’ll be greeted by the gentle whisper of Japanese culture; tatami mats, soft afternoon light filtering through paper shoji screens, and artwork that narrates tales of ancient Nara all create an inviting atmosphere perfect for relaxation. Many patrons, like Khoi Nguyen, leave raving about the exquisite desserts, recommending the parfait and the beloved warabi mochi, known for its delightful texture and subtle sweetness.

The menu at Yanagi Matcha Cafe reflects the rich culinary traditions of Nara. Start your meal with the Nara Traditional Lunch, a beautifully presented dish priced at JP¥2,500, which showcases local flavors and ingredients. Alternatively, indulge in the Sea Bream Chazuke Set Meal for just JP¥1,500. Each bite is a sensory journey, highlighting delicate flavors that are harmoniously balanced.

But don’t stop there; the cafe is a dessert lover's paradise. Treat yourself to a selection of handcrafted sweets such as the Warabi Mochi (JP¥640) and the decadent Matcha Cake (JP¥690), each offering a delightful experience that beautifully complements a warm cup of authentic matcha. If you’re looking for something refreshing, the Special Parfait, adorned with warabi mochi, matcha cake, and ice cream, is a must-try at JP¥1,300. And for those sweltering Nara days, the Homemade Uji Matcha Shaved Ice (JP¥900) promises a delectable cooling treat.

This hidden gem also boasts stunning views of a small lake, a feature that enhances the tranquil dining experience. As reflected in Senny Sutikno’s review, it’s not just about the food; the ambiance transports you back in time, making every visit a memorable adventure. Whether you sit on cushions atop tatami mats or gaze out over the serene waters, Yanagi Matcha Cafe is the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring Nara Park.

Amazing desserts. Love all the items we got. Just get whatever you want, chances are it will be good. But I recommend the parfait and the milk mochi thing they're known for.

Felt transported back in time. I was still extremely full from the fantastic udon, so wasn't able to enjoy the sweets as much. Quite an experience to be here, and also a visit to the toilet is a must! I felt like I have entered a time capsule~

Hidden dessert store that opens up to a surprisingly pleasant view of the little lake. Set in an old Japanese house it lends to an authentic tea experience, away from the crowd.

Hidden in plain sight. Try to come on Saturday or Sunday to dry the Nara traditional lunch (till 4pm). If not, the traditional desserts are delightful. Seating on the floor in a tatami room in the afternoon light makes for a unique and lovely memory. Calm view of the lake. A favourite.

Amazing place that offers a traditional lunch. A perfect spot for after wandering around Nara park. It has a beautiful view over the lake and the tatami mats and artwork on the wall are very atmospheric.

After feeding deer and watching mochi pounding demonstration, this is a lovely place to relax over the lake with sweets and drinks and cushions and tatami mats. Hosts are very kind. They give pictures and an English menu.
